Hypnotic PHP

I just launched Hypnotic PHP on Thursday, so how did it do?  $3,308 in 24 hours... and $4,574 in 48 hours, that's how it did!

Out of the 962 people who actually clicked through my e-mail, 211 bought.  That's a 21.9% conversion rate on my untested, half assed full of typos sales letter that I wrote in a few hours.

From those $17 purchasers: 141 of them accepted my $7 upsell containing 7 more videos and scripts (Urgency Tactics) ... 66% conversion rate there.

So the grand total was 352 sales for a total of $4,574... $4,320.56 after fees, but the number of sidetracked sales of other products, made up for those PayPal fees.

So why the heck didn't I do a dimesale or anything like that for this launch?

You don't ALWAYS need to repeat the same freaking exact process when you launch a product!

I used to have people complain about my dimesales (because they couldn't get in at a low price fast enough), this time I had people complain about the LACK of a dimesale (because he's used to getting in at a low price).

I haven't given up dimesales, but the effort that goes into pre-selling my list a few days ahead of time is a lot more valuable than doing all the steps to make sure my dimesale works correctly.

You don't ALWAYS need a dimesale offer, just some kind of scarcity.  Mine was really low-key... you get in now for $17, but after 48 hours it's $27.  No countdown timer, no ticker counting the number of sales... just a simple offer.

If you were on my list you got the Email Marketing on Crack videos that explained it...

  • Day 1: Tell your list something's going on sale at such and such date and time.
  • Day 2: Explain the biggest benefit.  (48 hour notice)
  • Day 3: List out the rest of the benefits.  (24 hour notice)
  • Day 4: Tell them you launched it.  (3 minute notice)
  • Day 5: Tell them it's the last chance to get in before you close the doors or raise the price

That's it!  It's not rocket science. I only started applying this after people told me the dimesales didn't give them time to read the sales letter.

But when I replaced the dimesale with standard scarcity, I still made the same amount of money with less customers -- which means less support.

I know some of you guys might cry and say, "Yeah right, you couldn't have done that without your big mailing list..."  How do you think I built that mailing list up in the first place?  Product launches on forums to build my list.

One final tip about pre-selling your list: Have the product ready to go before you start pre-selling it.  I see lots of guys promote first and then end up having to push the launch date back.

But me, I used those few extra days to whip up an irresistible upsell offer (the extra $7 videos and scripts).  90 minutes of work netted me an extra $707 on that promo.  🙂

Love the idea of the presell, Robert!

    Hi Robert,

Instead of a “half assed full of typos sales letter that I wrote in a few hours” and “used those few extra days to whip up an irresistible upsell offer” why not spend the time on making the product offered more robust?

You are aware and working on improving the geolocation script. Thank you. The feedback I am getting from testing is that the geolocation script results are accurate about 12% of the time – not 90-95% as advertised.

I realize there is a sweet spot between getting the product to market versus producing a higher quality product.

Consider this unrequested feedback. I just don’t want to have this thought in the back of my mind that wonders if I am getting what I think I am the next time I am ready to buy what you are offering.

    Thanks.

    Dave

    Robert,

Congratulations on the success of the new product.

Great post about there being more than one way to launch a product or service. There a an infinite number of ways and any of them can be successful if one takes the time to do their homework and set it up right.

You are 100% correct about getting the product ready first. I have blown off some launches because of delays. I figure if they can’t gate the launch right, they probably have no interest in service afterward.

  4. Acne Help says:

Uh-oh… I was considering buying this (once Robert confirmed it would work for me as described in my email to him) strictly for the geotargeting. So thanks for sharing your experience, Dave.

  5. Hey Robert,

Great launch amigo. Sure the 0.12 cent dimesale launches are wonderful to get a break on pricing sometimes (especially when you have a following of customers like me that tends to pickup everything you release!) but the $17 starting price point for 7 scripts & videos is a deal just the same Rob!

    Have a great weekend.

    Robert,

    Congrats on the new launch!!

as an aside… Maybe your geolocation script could make “the first person in each state” to get it for $1… the next person for $2…

i’m sure there are lots of creative ways to use the geoloaction script to create scarcity.

(“will only be sold to 5 people in each state”…)

I know. That’s my fault. I use the geo script I had been using on the warrior directory for years… it had 10-50 mile accuracy within the U.S.

It now uses a world database and is much more accurate.

  8. Howdy Robert,

Congrats on the great numbers and another smashing success.

It’s great to have you share the behind the scenes look at what
you’ve accomplished and how you’ve done it. It’s a great way
to help others unselfishly, and I for one appreciate it.

If anyone isn’t yet aware of it, I’ll certainly rave publicly about
your awesome personal post sale support. You’ve been very
timely about answering e-mails, fixing issues and trying new
things to create a better outcome. Rare, and treasured.

    Keep up the great work.

  9. Thanks for the presell tips.

Yea, I bought both the product and the upsell, =).

The price didn’t bother me any. I guess it’s because it’s you, and I already know what to expect when you release a new product.

You always take the time to explain different ways to put your product into use through your installation videos. So even at $27, it would still be a steal because, imho, you have always released some quality stuff, and some neat tips to go with it.

The whole idea of a dimesale didn’t phase me at all, but I could imagine some of those whiners that it did.

I mean, when you came out with your jquery script, I got it for an insane .24 cents man! I didn’t have anything to do that day, so I was one of those fortunate buyers sitting by, but I would still gladly pay the $30.36 you have it down for right now because you seem to over deliver with all of your products. That’s just me, lol.

But congratulations on your launch Robert, and update that dang geo-script!

    Have a great weekend.

    Michael

  10. Hello Robert,

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

I purchase your new packages, because of the quality of previous packages I’ve bought from you. Your codes have taught me so much about PHP and scripting, I’m able to totally re-write a lot of older PHP scripts that didn’t work properly to not only work, but do so the way I want it.

Must admit, your dime sales save me a great deal of money, but unless you release a string of really bad codes, I’ll pay whatever the asking price is for your script packages (Within reason of course.)

So I do not take the time to read your sales copy or anything. Your name and knowing it’s a new bundle of scripts is more than enough for me to spend my money.

I’m sure 70% to 85% of your past customers feel the same way. So please do not read too much into numbers and how well one method does over another. Unless you’re marketing to a totally new base of prospects, don’t think it really matters.

Hope the info I gave you can help you make the geo script more accurate. I know from previous experiences with a similar script, this type of coding is very problematic at best, since most people’s IP address is linked to a server based in another city or state.

Look forward to your next release.

    – Kenny

    Robert,

Thanks for the insights into your processes. I’ll definitely incorporate some of them into my upcoming New Year’s Giveaway event.

Any pointers/thoughts on Giveaways? Have you hosted one?

  12. Johnny says:

The one piece of info you didn’t give is what percent of people read your e-mail. 962 people read it, but what open rate did your mini-launch have?

    Thanks,

I’m on your list, but haven’t been for very long. Where can I find out about your email marketing on crack?

  14. D Dean Hall says:

    Robert,

I was one of the “lucky” ones who who picked it up at $17 and I also got the upsell. Cool stuff that I’ll put to work on a few sites.

As for the geo script I’ll leave that one in the box for now, 12% accuracy isn’t worth setting it up. I’ll wait for an improved version. I was discussing one of your earlier scripts from (?) where you can use MS calender to automatically add a reminder to revisit a website but the person I was talking to was more concerned with “Big Brother” aspects of the function. I like the segmented sales letter type function that keeps them inputting data to move forward.

Geotargeting may freak some people out (the paranoia crowd) same with lifting any other info from their machine without their giving it up themselves. Anyone got any reliable figures of how many may be turned off by this kind versus how many extra sales?

Robert, thanks again and I’ll look forward to your next product.

  15. Congratulations, Robert!

And thank you for not using a dimesale in this case. I was able to get a good night’s sleep.

True, I ended up spending more than in your previous dimesales, but health is wealth. 🙂

Besides, it’s easy to recover the $17 investment, thanks to your wonderful, easy-to-implement, and uber-easy-to-use PHP scripts.

  16. Dave Wooding says:

    To be fair,

“As for the geo script I’ll leave that one in the box for now, 12% accuracy isn’t worth setting it up.”

That number if based on what people reported, a portion of the results are from people overseas.

For people within the US, the farthest way reported included comments like:

“Well I’m in Oklahoma and it put me in very southern Texas almost at the border.”

“I tried it for ya and it was several hundred miles off, and the wrong state too.”

“came close, but put me about 60 miles from the office.”

“missed me by about 75 miles”

“Wrong city and state. Missed by approx 150 miles.”

“Just checked again and it was as close as it can be.
It said Albany, NY and I’m in Troy which is just across the river.”

I’ve looked at prices for IP database stuff and it isn’t cheap, especially if you consider regular updates.

I’m just pressing Robert because I know he can do it 🙂

    Dave

  17. D&B Paydex says:

    Robert,

why don’t you try using a “wiki” type idea getting people to send in their location to make the script more and more accurate…

Also, you could use datae you already have about your customers (us!0 and use that information along with IP address to make your script continually more accurate…

  18. Janice says:

    Hi Robert

I bought the product and just want to use the geo-targeting script to tell me which COUNTRY a person is in – in particular whether they are UK or US based.

    How accurate is that information?

    thanks

    Janice

  19. Robert Plank says:

    How accurate is that information?

The original geotargeting database I released was a few years out of date (I distributed a database I had implemented successfully for several years)… and just updated it this weekend to a database that’s 99.5% accurate country-to-country and 79% accurate city-to-city within a 25 mile radius.

Geotargeting is never going to be 100% accurate since people rent out IP space or structure it weird, for example all AOL users “look like” they are in Virginia.

  20. Mike says:

    Robert,

I am working on the Image Headlines and really like it.

But the spacing between lines seems to vary with the length of line. In a long sales headline that means the spacing is different between lines.

Is there a way to address that?

Also, I’m going to look further, but I assume we could modify the script to use h3, h4, etc, to really snaz things up?

(didn’t see a support link, so I’m posting this here)

Can you show me an example of that?

Also, I’m going to look further, but I assume we could modify the script to use h3, h4, etc, to really snaz things up?

I am actually working on a CSS parser for it this week, so you can simply point the script to a CSS file and it will create an image with whatever colors you choose if it’s an h3, h4, etc.

As usual I’ll send out the update for free, just like I updated you guys with the new geo script this morning.

Just like with all my scripts, I wanted to release the simplest version 1 possible of the script to see if there was any interest, before getting crazy and adding a bunch of stuff.

Right now it looks like the geotargeting and image headlines are the most popular script in the package, instant e-course is a close 3rd.

  24. Robert,

Can you reopen some old products on a dimesale? take some stuff that has been sitting fuddy-duddy and get some of us that want to buy it but can’t afford to get EVERY SINGLE AWESOME PRODUCT you sell?

    hmm? pretty please?

  25. Robert Plank says:

how do I “quote” other responses in my response?

Wrap a BLOCKQUOTE html tag around it.

Can you reopen some old products on a dimesale? take some stuff that has been sitting fuddy-duddy and get some of us that want to buy it but can’t afford to get EVERY SINGLE AWESOME PRODUCT you sell?

I would like to, but that would be unfair for people who paid full price, even if it was several years ago. It’s better to launch at a dimesale and then set a fixed price. What old stuff of mine did you want?

  26. Let’s see..

JV Plus, Clickbank Switch, Software Secrets Exposed…

    A whole bunch! 🙂

Maybe you should just give away like “if you purchased five of my products in the past, here is a freebie to pick” or something 🙂

or maybe offer something in exchange for some work… like a poll, or feedback… that it!

“give me detailed feedback on my product XXX and as a gift i’ll send you one of my older products, a bestseller…. blah blah blah…”

hows my “fast food’ copy? 😀

  27. Good job Robert!

Just installed your update for GEO and not only does it has my City and State right, but it was only a few numbers off from having my Zip Code correct. I’m in 19122 and the script said I’m in 19140.

Fantastic job. I’m going to add this code on some of my pages and see how it effects my opt-in rates.

Special Offer for Residents of !

Using the country insertion trick boosted my opt-in rates about 38%, so I do know this works.

  28. Mike says:

    re headline length and spacing:

Here is a page with some variations in line length. Unless my eyes deceive me, it looks like a shorter line results in a smaller space between the lines.

    http://newyouyear.com/plank/headlinetest.php

It isn’t a huge difference, but can be noticeable.

Looking forward to the update for multiple sizes.

    Thanks,

  29. Robert Plank says:

Uploading the script now that will let you do multiple sizes, it should be on there in a few hours.

The spacing between the lines… that’s the way the browsers render the images that are wider than the screen, nothing to do with my coding.

Try enlarging that page in Firefox (hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel up). As soon as ANY of those images become bigger than the screen, it adds a little space down below.

Just don’t let the images get wider than the page and it won’t happen… nothing I can do to change the way IE and FF render images 🙂

  30. ref says:

Great job. I predict you will do great when you quit your day job this year!
